Miao Indigo Resist Cushions

These large cushions are made from a vintage Miao indigo resist bedcover. The quality of the dye resist work is exceptional. These provincial textiles can sometimes have a lot of indigo bleed from under the stencil,  but this is a lovely crisp example. The white cotton ground has a thick dense weave and was woven on a narrow loom. The widths then sewn together to make the larger piece, so each cushion front has an original seam which adds to its charm.
The backs of the cushions are another Chinese minority textile, this time vintage Buyi homespun in a narrow stripe.
The corners are adorned with small red tassels taken from a piece of C19 French passementerie to give a little accent of colour.
