This striking framed textile is a vintage Miao migration skirt. The skirt is made from handloomed hemp which has been heavily pleated. There is about 4m of fabric in the skirt so it fans out to a beautiful circle. The hemp is patterned with indigo batik and decorated with appliqued ribbons. The pattern on the skirts is said to depict the journey of Miao ancestors as they made the migration from their homeland 5,000 yeas ago to where they are now. The ribbons represent the rivers crossed. Hence they are known as migration skirts.
The skirt is mounted on plain linen over a stretched canvas. It make a fabulous piece of wall art being 54" square. It is ready to go, but I can also source an acrylic dust cover for it which gives it a more contemporary look if desired. Please ask for a quote.
