Banjara Cushion with Cowrie Shell Trim

SOLD

Code: BANJ09

Dimensions:

W: 18" (45.7 cm)H: 18" (45.7 cm)

This wonderful cushion is the face of an old Banjara dowry bag. The Banjara are a semi nomadic group in India, reknown for their needlework skills. They use layers of recycled textiles, which are sewn together with kantha stitches and decorated with cowrie shells and pompons.
This gorgeous cushion is madder red, ochre and green, with a cowrie shell trim and dates to the first half of the C20, so all the colours are beautifully muted.
It has a patch on one side to cover an area of damage. The patch is from another bag and is therefore hardly noticeable, see photo.
The cushion is backed with vintage hemp, has zip closure and feather pad.

It can be viewed in my studio in Purley by appointment, or please ask for a shipping quote.

If you are looking for a collection of cushions, I offer a concierge service whereby I will bring a car load of cushions for you to try on location or at your office.
