Dimensions:
This Marsh Arab Blanket dates to the second half C20. It's difficult to age because it's in such good condition, but it is a rare thing. The Marsh Arabs lived in wetlands in Southern Iraq for centuries and were all but wiped out by Sadam Hussein who drained the marshlands in which they lived and destroyed their villages. These heavily embroidered blankets were unique to this area. The blankets were purchased initially from Bedouin traders in nearby towns and then embroidered by young women for their marriage beds or sometimes mothers for their sons. This blanket is complete, heavily embroidered and in very good condition. It should be used as a blanket for a bed or a wall hanging. Even I couldn't bring myself to cut it up.
It can be viewed in my studio in Purley by appointment or please ask for a shipping quote.
