This heavily pleated skirt is by the Miao ethnic minority from Sichuan, SW China. The skirt dates to the first half of the C20. It is made from hemp with an indigo batik pattern to the main body of the skirt and a deep border with embroidery in yellow, orange and green silk and applique in black, white and red cottons. The needlework skills are exquisite and considering that there is over 4.5m of skirt, it would have taken a very long time to do. The skirt was finally pleated and it would have sashayed wonderfully as the wearer moved
I've mounted the skirt on linen over a canvas stretched framed. The pleating gives a wonderful sculptural character to the piece.

The price does not inlude an acrylic dust cover but this can be quoted for and supplied if required.
