These cushions are made from a vintage Maonan wedding blanket. The Maonan are a Chinese minority group or "hilltribe" and these blankets were handloomed for a beloved son or daughter for their wedding chest. The blankets comprised 2 or 3 central panels woven in cotton and silk on a narrow loom, about 13" wide. The panels were sewn together to make a larger piece which was then surrounded by a couple of borders of handloomed cotton. The blanket was backed with handloomed indigo and then stuffed with raw cotton for warmth. The colour of this blanket is from the mineral dye senna. The blanket was decorated with auspicious symbols in a supplementary floating weft stitch. These were originally colourful silks but they've faded and worn over time so in some areas you can only see the outline. The overall effect is a very pretty muted red earth colour with glints of pale silks. I've backed the cushions with a blush coloured vintage hemp and added gold coloured bamboo tassels. There are zip fasteners and feather pads.
